Accommodation overview: Anchor and Chain is situated right on the banks of the Beauly Firth waters, with spectacular views of the firth and the Glen Affric hills to the west, and Inverness and the foothills of the Cairngorms to the east. This exceptionally spacious, single-storey, semi detached property is ideal for larger groups or for a combined family holiday. All windows enjoy superb panoramic views across the water. In season dolphins can be seen playing, ospreys fishing and seals basking on the shoreline. There is a large lounge/conservatory with a corner bar. The massive dining room has a small dance floor in the centre - ideal for parties and those special celebrations. With five twin bedrooms, all with own en suite bathrooms, and professional-style kitchen it provides an ideal location for a real Highland gathering. Although just ten minutes drive from Inverness the property is situated in a quiet, tranquil backwater close to the picturesque hamlet of Coulmore (Gaelic for shelter or nook). Here there is an excellent local inn, a small shop and local tearooms. There are numerous sporting opportunities and attractions right on the doorstep. Visitors are welcome to launch their own boats or canoes from the adjoining slipway. A storage park for boats and outboard motors is available. Fishing, horse riding and pony trekking, sailing, mountain climbing, hill walking and mountain biking are all enjoyed in the locality. Coulmore is one of the best situated villages for exploring the Highlands. Head west along the shores of Loch Ness to Fort William, Mallaig and the roads to the Isles. To the north is the wild and dramatic scenery of Sutherland and Caithness and to the south Aviemore and the Cairngorm mountain range. Within ten minutes drive is Culloden Battlefield, Cawdor Castle and the vibrant bustling city of Inverness. Accommodation overview: Set amongst the rolling Angus countryside, Courtyard Cottage is a beautiful traditional stone built cottage which has recently been renovated to a high standard. The kitchen is the heart of this house with high ceilings, and roof windows which flood the room with light. Courtyard Cottage is just a short drive from Forfar, which offers a good selection of shops and restaurants. Be sure and make a trip to Arbroath to sample the famous Arbroath Smokie, a wood-smoked haddock, which is produced in a small family smokehouse and is a real delicacy. The area boasts some fine beaches, including Montrose beach which is a blue flag beach, 50 miles of unspoilt Angus coastline and dramatic red sandstone cliffs. Lunan Bay, recently voted as one of the best beaches in Scotland is well worth a visit. The Montrose basin nature reserve is just 18 miles away. Set on the edge of a tidal estuary, the basin attracts over 50,000 migratory birds each year. You can watch the busy life of these birds from the comfort of the visitor centre, which has a panoramic view of the basin. Neighbouring Edzell and Kirriemuir are the gateway to the magnificent Angus glens, the foothills of the mighty Cairngorm Mountains, a haven for wildlife and a peaceful refuge from modern life. The glens and surrounding countryside offer numerous walks for all abilities, including 14 of Scotland's munros - mountains over 3,000ft. Other activities to try are horse riding, fishing, sea kayaking, cycling or even a round of golf at Carnoustie, which has hosted the Open on numerous occasions. This area is renowned for its large number of golf courses, many at championship level. Glamis Castle, childhood home of the Queen Mother and setting for Shakespeare's Macbeth, is only 6 miles away, here you can take a trip back through over 600 years of history or enjoy the beauty of the gardens and grounds. Accommodation overview: This former mill house dates back over 200 years and is reputedly the oldest house in Scotland's smallest Burgh of New Galloway. This cottage simply oozes character and some of the rooms are decorated in a Victorian Gothic style. The dining room even has a secret cupboard! The area around New Galloway simply offers all the best that nature has to offer from the amazing wildlife to the stunning views and scenery. Nowhere in the UK has more forests to explore and enjoy and The Galloway Park is Britain's largest covering an amazing 300 square miles. Combining ancient woodland, forest, moorland and lochs, it's here that you'll discover some fine views, and to top it all the forest has some of the darkest skies in the World, which allows clear views of the stars and that's official as Galloway has just won a dark sky award! The forest protects some wonderful secrets; the Raider's Road with its Otter Pool and Labyrinth, the Queen's Drive with its stunning Loch at Clatteringshaws and the beautiful Black Loch, and finally not forgetting the glimpses of deer and wild goats and the Glen 'O' the Bar viewpoint. There are rolling hills and open estuaries, a plethora of sandy beaches and rivers bursting with fish, making this an angler's paradise. Loch Ken is on the doorstep but it's not just a place for fishermen; the Galloway Sailing Centre is a great day out and the loch is a superb spot for a barbecue at one of the many loch side beaches. Each season offers a new sight to behold from the brilliance of bluebells, to the blazing autumnal colours. Leave your cars at home and admire the red squirrels. feral goats, deer and even watch the red kites being fed. Dumfries and Galloway is well known for its mild climate, diversity of recreational activities and unspoilt countryside. There is excellent hill walking to be had in the Galloway Hills; the Rhinns of Kells and the Rig of the Jarkness are just two of many delights just waiting to be discovered! Sled dog rides train trips to the resort at the top of the mountain and the Strathspey steam railway are also found here and Britain's only freely roaming reindeer herd can be spotted against the stunning backdrop of Glenmore. Good restaurants themed bars live music and shops are all within ½ mile.
