Accommodation overview: Located in the quiet unspoilt countryside that lies behind North Devon’s picturesque coastline, Stepps Farm offers good sized accommodation that is ideal for a large family or group. The detached house has been renovated but retains its charm with exposed beams and wood-burning stove in the living room. The large kitchen/breakfast area is ideal for getting everyone fed and ready for a day on some of the local beaches or exploring the surrounding countryside and attractions. There are four reception rooms to give everyone enough space to ensure a relaxing holiday. The very generous master bedroom has en-suite facilities and the other bedrooms and bathrooms are all finished to a high standard. Outside there are plenty of sitting-out areas to enjoy and the large paddock area is ideal for a game of rounders or football or to observe the local wild life, if you are quiet! The house is situated in the pretty hamlet of Middle Marwood, however there are numerous attractions within easy reach of the house including the Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park, Watermouth Castle and the Lynton to Lynmouth cliff railway. At Saunton, Croyde and Woolacombe, some of the best and cleanest surf beaches in the country can be found, as well as many smaller coves and bays. Exmoor and the South West Coast Path are located close by and on a clear day the views of the surrounding coast and countryside can be spectacular from these well known walking areas. There are National Trust properties at Arlington and Knightshayes, the RHS gardens at Rosemoor, Great Torrington and Marwood Gardens 2 miles away. Bikes can be hired locally to explore the Tarka Trail and there is good fishing available for both game and sea fishing as well as golf courses to suit all abilities. Shop 4 miles, pub 1 mile. Accommodation overview: West Lynch, thatched and cosy, has been with the same family for three centuries and lies on the sunny side of the Porlock Valley. Inside, relaxation and comfort abound - it is beautifully furnished with lots of arts and crafts, many sitting areas, 50in and 32in TVs and with facilities such as Wii, games room and indoor pool table. Outside catering is available by an inspired professional chef by arrangement for that special occasion or treat. National Trust woodlands from the former Acland Estates are just beyond the house. These lead to the open moors - with large herds of red deer, Exmoor ponies, the buzzards on the wing and foxes in thir lairs - and dramatic headland of Hurlstone, looking west down to Devon and north to the Welsh coast. Also within walking distance are the romantic villages of Bossington, Selworthy, Allerford and bustling Porlock for year-round needs, as well as Minehead’s farmers’ market. There is surfing at Lynmouth or beyond to Croyde and Woolacombe, and golf at Minehead or the fine course at Saunton for a true test. Horse riding is available for all abilities and entertainment for both children and adults at Lynch Farm and Tropicaria further on. Accommodation overview: This imposing Georgian house lies literally a stone’s throw from the beach. Situated in the pretty North Devon village of Instow this impressive house, one of a pair, has unrivalled westerly views out towards the Taw and Torridge Estuary and on towards Lundy Island. Enjoy the beautiful sunsets from the garden or the impressive sitting room. The house offers itself as either an ideal family holiday location or somewhere to celebrate a special occasion. At the entrance of Greenwood Grange is Thorncombe Wood - a wildlife sanctuary from which a nature trail leads through magnificent chestnuts, beeches and oaks, and through 70 acres of black heath, furze, birch, holly, heather and rhododendrons. This is just one of many walks directly from the door over some of the most beautiful countryside in Dorset, perfect for healthy walks for dog lovers and all the family. Greenwood Grange offers bicycles for hire and a drop-off and pick-up service by prior arrangement. Those interested in the literary landscape can explore the locations of Hardy’s famous novels. Steeped in history, Greenwood Grange was built by Thomas Hardy’s father, whilst a short distance away is the thatched cottage where Hardy himself was born, built by his great-grandfather and little altered. At Lower Bockhampton, Hardy went to school and there is a lovely walk from there to the next village, Stinsford, where his heart is buried. All around is a wealth of glorious National Trust countryside, pretty towns and villages as well as the beautiful coastline just 6 miles away. Excellent local village restaurants and pubs can be recommended. Kingston Maurward College with animal park, gardens, conference, function and education centre is within walking distance. Dorchester (Roman Durnovaria and Hardy’s ‘Casterbridge’) is a pleasant walk away (2 miles) and a most attractive country town, with museums of the dinosaur and the military, swimming pool, golf (good golf can also be found at Weymouth and Charminster) and has plenty of good shops, restaurants and pubs. Also of interest is Prince Charles’s development at Poundbury, near Dorchester. Weymouth is 8 miles with its Georgian seafront Blue Flag beach - ideal for castle building! It is overlooked by an elegant 3-mile level esplanade; there is swimming from the beach, and there are lots of traditional entertainments. Two nearby RSPB reserves are at Lodmoor and Radipole which has nature trails from which grebes, swans and warblers may be seen. Nearby Portland is set to hold Olympic sailing events in 2012. The beach at Ringstead Bay (6 miles) is known for its geology, fossils and the vegetation and wildlife of its undercliff; nearby can be seen the outlines of a village abandoned in the Middle Ages. The Dorset World Heritage Coastal Path offers magnificent views and surprising sights, such as the natural arch of Durdle Door, and the almost circular cove of Lulworth, about 7 miles away. Further west dotted along the coastline towards West Bay and the market town of Bridport are the ‘chocolate box’ villages of Burton Bradstock and Abbotsbury (famous for its swannery and gardens). Heathfield Down Farm is a unique Grade II listed farmstead, set in some 80 acres of tranquil grounds, amidst the glorious South Hams countryside. The main drive into the properties sweeps down for approximately ½ mile through farmland towards Heathfield Down house and barns. These three superb properties (refs HQQN, HRRD and HXF) offer a truly peaceful and tranquil location, where the only sounds are of the rooks crowing and sheep in the meadows bleating. The main building at Heathfield is an impressive large Devon longhouse split into two. The rooms are all spacious and very well equipped. To the side is Heathfield Down Cottage (HXF), a contemporary yet cosy, detached, stone barn conversion. The beach at Bantham is easily accessible, as is Thurlestone, a chocolate-box village of pink-washed thatched cottages, with a splendid sandy beach backed by rolling farmland. There is golf at Thurlestone and Bigbury, and fishing on the nearby River Avon. Plymouth and Exeter with their extensive shopping and leisure facilities are about 14 miles and 40 miles respectively. Exeter is dominated by the distinctive St Peter’s Cathedral, a stately monument made conspicuous by two great Norman towers flanking the nave, with much of the interior dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries. Other ancient buildings include the 14th-century Guildhall, several medieval churches and the old Quayside with the smart Custom House, built in 1681.
