Accommodation overview: Built in 1879, this handsome detached marine house is situated on the sea front in the attractive town of Aldeburgh. The house has been fully refurbished to a very high standard and has well proportioned rooms with high ceilings. The drawing room and master bedroom boast fantastic views over the beach.
High House and April Cottage (BQK) lie in the heart of Aldeburgh, an attractive and peaceful resort, which grew on the site of an old medieval fishing and ship town. The property makes a wonderful holiday base from which to explore the area, and local fresh fish is still sold from the fishermen’s huts along the beach. The high street is full of excellent restaurants, shops and art galleries - perfect for art lovers.
For many years Aldeburgh was the home of composer Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears and was the setting for many of Britten’s operas. In 1968 Britten converted Snape Maltings Concert Hall from a maltings, and it is now famous for the Aldeburgh Festival of Music and Arts, which is held annually in June. The maltings complex is a pleasant place to browse around even when concerts are not being held - there are various shops, a gallery and an antiques and collectors’ centre, as well as the Plough and Sail pub, where good country food is served. Boat trips can also be enjoyed to explore the upper reaches of the River Alde.
Within a few miles is the picturesque and unspoilt market town of Orford, famous for its oystery, and dominated by its 14th-century church and 12th-century castle. The village of Thorpeness is 1 mile along the coast and has 64 acres of mere (boating lake), superb golf course and a delightful beach. Shop and pub 200 yards.
