The Oakes is convenient for the town of Bury St Edmunds where visitors can visit the cathedral and abbey gardens or enjoy a play in the Georgian playhouse built in 1819. Also within easy driving distance are the picturesque villages of Clare, Lavenham and Long Melford and the town of Sudbury (home of Gainsborough). There are several NT properties in the area including Ickworth House and Kentwell Hall.
